I just returned from five days in California. My son Christian and I attended the FIRE conference: Drawing a Line in the Sand, which was held in Manteca, California. It was tremendous!
Dr. Jay Grimstead’s message “The Reformation & Church Council Vision” opened the conference by giving an overview of the decline of the Evangelicalism. This decline has its roots in the compromising of the inerrancy of Scripture. Once inerrancy is compromised, rejection of other doctrines becomes inevitable. The International Church Council Project has targeted twenty-four doctrine and issue topics where many churches have lost their way. A few of these include the Trinity, the substitutionary atonement of Christ, Pelagianism (whether people are born with a sin nature or not), the Lordship of Christ, whether there is a real and eternal hell, and others.
The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Peter Hammond, missionary from South Africa and president of Frontline Fellowship. His opening message was “The Church Council & History Revisited”. Dr. Hammond gave a startling overview of the last five hundred years of church, beginning with the Reformation ignited by Martin Luther which brought wondrous light to the West which in turn resulted in industry and invention which eventually raised the standard of living, not just for the West, but for much of the modern world. Today this material progress and blessing is in danger of God’s judgment because the Christian West is abandoning God’s standards.
Dr. E. Calvin Beisner of the Cornwall Alliance showed us how the environmental movement is saturated with falsehoods and anti-Christian agenda. Among other things Dr. Beisner showed how the “Green” movement seeks to undo the material progress that has brought many mercies to people all around the world. For instance they seek to limit and eliminate carbon fuels (coal, wood, other things used for low-cost fuel). This of itself would curtail the progress of developing nations and plunge the poorest further into poverty by taking from them inexpensive ways to heat their homes and cook their food. (See below for a free booklet by Dr. Beisner.)
Dr. Marshall Foster of the World History Institute spoke on “America’s Christian History and It’s Rejection of that History”. He is co-producer with Curt Cameron of the film Monumental. Dr. Foster spoke with passion of how Western culture in general and America in particular has forgotten the rich heritage bequeathed to us. We have not merely forgotten, but there are those who have done a good job erasing the Christian history of the United States from our culture. The government schools and secular media (news casting, films, books, and television) have and are purposefully obscuring real history and bit by bit rewriting history. Without knowing where we have been we cannot know where we are headed; we cannot know the heights from which we have fallen.
The conference also had sessions dedicated to the official documents; after discussion a topic editing suggestions were discussed and then submitted. These will be incorporated with other suggestions by which we are attempting to make the official documents more Biblical, logical, and concise.
A historic conference to be sure!
